Personal, first class tuition, with full accreditation
The Essex Institute is registered with the United Kingdom Register of Learning Providers (No.10008779) and is dedicated to providing the very best of personal tuition for every student, whether that student is studying in our classroom or at home.
Our tuition is first class and our ongoing interest in our students is second to none, extending beyond training into lifetime professional support, whether you go into full-time practice or just do the occasional quit-smoking session.
When you study 'in house' with us, you will be eligible for immediate membership of all our accrediting bodies. This is optional but if you took every one of them, you would have these professional qualifications to show after your name:
- DHP (This is the basic certification diploma)
- LAPHP
- MSSM
- MIMDHA
- ANRPC
Most people do not join every one of those organisations and we will advise you of the most relevant to your professional requirements upon graduation.
You will also be eligible for registration with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council - only courses which teach the new (at 2011) Core Curriculum and reach or surpass the National Occupations Standards confer this elegibility. The Essex Institute's Principal, Terence Watts, was closely involved with the creation of the Core Curriculum, so you can be certain that our training reaches the required standard.
Having such certification to show on your consulting room wall definitely helps to instil confidence into your clients, confidence in your professional capabilities and expertise. And having these qualifications makes it easier to join other organisations in the future, should you wish to do so.
The Institute's principal, Terence Watts, has been a busy full-time hypnotherapist in private practice since 1989, helping clients to overcome all manner of psychological difficulties.
In addition, he is a popular International lecturer, trainer and presenter, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, as well as a published author of hypnotherapy books and manuals and has written dozens of articles for the journals of various of hypnotherapy schools.

The importance of sound teaching methods
When learning a new skill, the quality of the training you receive is obviously very important. When there are too many teachers, maintaining a guaranteed quality of tuition is as difficult for a hypnotherapy school as it is in the ‘standard’ educational system. The situation may sometimes be worsened when a class is taught by several different tutors as happens in some hypnotherapy schools; then, this problem becomes even more noticeable. On the other hand, if you have only one teacher, you may well find that you acquire a somewhat narrow view of the subject, thus hindering your future development.
Our training programme avoids these potential difficulties. First of all, there is a 'main' teacher (Terence himself on some courses, though every course is conducted by a skilled and experienced teacher), ensuring that you acquire a sound ‘central knowledge base’ from an experienced practitioner. Then visiting professionals, each experienced in a specialist field, present first-class lectures and talks, ensuring that your expertise will be as well-rounded as possible.
As yet, there are no officially recognised qualifications within the field of hypnotherapy, although this situation may well change in the not-too-distant future. If regulation is introduced, then all working therapists will need to be able to show that they have been trained in safe, efficient and modern techniques.
At the Essex Institute, we ensure that just such a standard of ‘hypnoeducation’ is maintained, both via the strength of the material we teach and the manner in which it is taught, covering every necessary practical and theoretical aspect of the work in fine detail. In addition, Terence is personally involved (via www.ukcho.co.uk) with the devlopment of proposed regulation, including a 'core curriculum' for training organisations.
